Council Coup d’état Not Just A Bartlesville Phenomenon

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

In the town of Quartzsite, Arizona, the City Council has declared a “State of Emergency” and ousted the elected mayor, Ed Foster, over a video which resulted in death threats against the members of the council.  The video was of a citizen, Jennifer Jones, being arrested during the public comment portion of a council meeting for criticizing the council for violating the Open Meetings Act.   Foster’s crime?  Publicly stating that Jones’ rights were being violated.  As part of the “State of Emergency”, the Council has decreed that it can meet in secret and all public comment has been suspended.

Does this sound like déjà vu, or what?  When Dear Mister Mayor Man Tom Gorman ousted then-Mayor Nikkel, he then got the council to agree to blackout the public comment portion of the the council meetings.  The rationale used was that there were “troublemakers” by the names of Joel Rabin and Sharon Hurst, who, through their public criticism of the city and its violation of  laws such as the Open Meetings Act were trying to foment unrest and violence.  Yes, a couple that gets senior citizen discounts are radicals that will disturb the peace – imagine that!

What is so ironic about the situation in Oklahoma and Arizona is that these are the two reddest states in the union, two states where the politicians love to claim that they are pro-Constitution and yet are so willing to remove the most basic right, the right to seek redress from the government.  All of the fascists need to read two documents very closely – “The Declaration of Independence” and the “U.S. Constitution”.  Both documents, views which the Founding Fathers held dear and fought and died for, clearly state the we, the governed, have every right to criticize our government when our government is doing things wrong.  The government is not for, and should never be for, some elite who think it is their God-given right to govern because of their family or wealth or fame; no the government should be of, and for, the people, the commoner.  We fought a bloody revolution and and even bloodier civil war to establish, once and for all, that all of us are equal, and that each and every one of us is the equal of each and every one else, regardless of race, creed, heritage, wealth, or family.  We fought two wars on our own soil, against our own neighbors and brethren, to establish, once and for all, the triumph of egalitarianism and capitalism over nepotism, feudalism, and aristocracy.

Without basements, Joplin had scant refuge from tornado

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

For years, I have been preaching the value of basements, especially in stormy weather.  When the tornado blew threw Saint Louis on Good Friday, there was a lot of damage, but no deaths.  Saint Louis is a basement city, where basements are the norm, not the exception.  A mere three hundred miles down the road, a tornado rips through Joplin, killing over 130 and becoming the deadliest single tornado since 1947.  Yes, the Joplin tornado was an EF-5 as compared to an EF-3, but no deaths versus over 130?  The stark contrast isn’t the strength of the tornadoes, but the presence of, or lack of, basements.  Even Reuters has picked up on it-

JOPLIN, Mo (Reuters) – Like a lot of other Joplin homeowners, Herndon Snider rode out the May 22 tornado in a bathtub. Other popular places to take cover from the vicious tornado were closets and center hallways.

Such is the price people pay for living in communities such as Joplin where basements are rare due to rocky, wet soil.

About 82 percent of homes in the Joplin area have no basements, according to the Jasper County assessor’s office.

The vulnerability of residents to injury or death in tornadoes for lack of a basement has drawn attention to the need for more storm shelters for individuals or large groups of people.

“I’ll bet there will be a lot of them built here,” Snider said.

The EF-5 tornado has been rated the deadliest single twister in the United States since 1947. The official death toll was 139 as of Saturday.

Joplin Fire Chief Mitch Randles saw first-hand what a tornado can do. The twister destroyed his house, which has no basement. Nobody was home at the time.

“My wife told me we are never going to own a home without a basement or storm shelter,” Randles said.

Digging basements in most of Joplin is impractical and cost-prohibitive because of a high water table and limestone just below the surface, said John Knapp, professor of geophysics at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.

Unfavorable soil contributes to a lack of basements in much of the South, where just over 11 percent of new homes include full or partial basements, according to a 2009 survey by the U.S. Census Bureau.

By contrast, more than 77 percent of new houses in the Midwest and Northeast had basements, the survey found. In the West, 21 percent of new homes had basements.

The percentage of new homes with basements has dropped steadily in the last 20 years, probably due to cost, according to Crystal Harrington, executive officer of the Homebuilders Association of Southwest Missouri.

Nationally, 42 percent of new homes had basements in 1992, according to the Census survey, compared to 30 percent in 2009.

Knapp said northern U.S. residents can thank glaciers for their basements. Glaciers left a deep layer of topsoil in regions generally north of the Missouri River. In Kansas City, just 160 miles north of Joplin, more than 90 percent of homes have basements, according to county assessors.

Safety officials note basements do not guarantee safety in a tornado because the house can collapse and trap or injure occupants. But many people killed in the Joplin tornado were swept from their homes, which would be less likely if they were in a basement.

Mayor Mike Woolston said that “in an ideal world” shelters would be accessible quickly throughout residential areas, but he said they are hard to justify because major tornadoes are still a rare occurrence.

Randles said the 20-minute tornado warning most of Joplin received on May 22 was unusually long and six or seven minutes are more common, leaving little time to reach a shelter.

“You’d almost have to have one on every block,” Randles said. “By the time you found your car keys and got going, the tornado would be there.”

Keith Stammer, emergency management director for Joplin and Jasper County, agreed.

“An attempt to move to other locations would risk placing people in danger,” Stammer said.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has funding available to help pay for putting shelters in public buildings, such as schools and government structures, said spokeswoman Susie Stoner.

The alternative to community shelters is for individuals to put shelters in their homes. One such shelter is called a safe room, typically a concrete-reinforced master closet or laundry room, said Harrington.

Another alternative is a poured concrete, above-ground structure in the shape of a vault that is often put in a garage, she said. Those structures typically cost as little as $2,000 and were growing in popularity even before the recent tornado, she said.

“It’s an absolutely viable product right now,” Harrington said.

(This sory was corrected in the third paragraph to reflect revised calculations by the Jasper County assessor’s office)

Now, I must take exception to something that was stated in the article, namely the unsuitability of Joplin for basements.   Except in bogs, swamps, or floodplains, basements can pretty much be built anywhere.  Springfield, Illinois, has a high water table, but basements are common, thanks to sump pumps.  If you take a vacant chunk of land with a high water table, and build on it a bunch of houses with basements and sump pumps, over time that water table will be lowered, thanks to the combined efforts of all the sump pumps.  If the Aztecs can build a city on a lake, I think we can build basements in areas with high water tables.  As for the limestone, limestone can always be dug or broken or blasted out.  Yes, to build basements in less than ideal areas is not cheap, but it can be done, and it should be done.  Is one human life worth the cost of a basement?  I don’t think it is, but then I am just naive.

When A Man Points A Gun At You, Do What He Says

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

For years, they’ve told us that if someone has a gun, and wants to take something from you, the smartest option is to give it to them, rather than risk your life trying to play the hero.  Tragically, a Tulsan did not heed that warning and paid with his life.

The Tulsa police responded early this afternoon to a hostage situation at a house.  Upon the arrival of the police, the hostage taker fled to a nearby supermarket, where he went in and started shooting.  Luckily, no one was killed inside the supermarket.  With the police closing in, the gun-wielding man tried to hijack a vehicle, and the owner of the vehicle refused to let him take it.  He then shot and killed the owner.  When it was all said and done, the bad guy ended up being shot dead as well, either by his own hand or by the police.

I don’t know about you, but when a gun-wielding man points a gun at me and tells me he wants to take my car, I’d be more than happy to let him have it.  A car is a piece of property that can be replaced; I cannot.  No car is worth dying over.

Yeah! Finally Someone Is Held Accountable!

As a taxpayer, it is frustrating as all get out to know that people are intentionally goosing the system to get monies from the state that they aren’t entitled to.  It starts easy enough, a couple hundred – no one will notice, right?  Once you taste the blood, your appetite becomes voracious, and you got to do it again.  Another couple hundred – cool!  Why work when you can have money handed to you, right?

There are two problems with those who goose the system.  First, once you get a taste of free money, you just can’t stop yourself, it becomes an addiction, and you just keep going back for more and more and more, not realizing that the more you eat at the trough, the more likely it is that you will be caught.  Second, there are those who are proud of the fact that they goose the system, and even brag about it!  Of course, braggadocio has brought down many criminals, as those who are being bragged to resent the cheating and turn it in.  I know people who not only keep dipping in the free pool, but also brag about it!

As someone who sees this, it really hacks me off.  After all, if I, and the other 99% of citizens, have to acquire wealth the honest way, then everyone should.  To top it off, when you sponge off of the government, you sponge off, well, me, as it is my dollars (and the dollars of the other 99%) that support the system that the sponges are siphoning from.  I was delighted, then, to read an article about a cheat who did get caught, and has to pay it all back, to the tune of over $120,000.

Bowlegs woman who lied to receive medical benefits will pay restitution, serve probation

A woman accused of making false statements to receive medical benefits was sentenced Wednesday to serve four years of probation and make restitution payments of $121,482.

A Bowlegs woman was sentenced Wednesday to four years of probation for making false claims to receive more than $121,482 worth of medical and social security benefits and food stamps.

Mary Ann Flowers made false claims to receive medical benefits for treatment of cancer and other ailments, according to court records. Flowers was born in 1951, records show. A specific date of birth is not listed.

On Wednesday, an Oklahoma City federal court judge ordered Flowers to spend 120 days in home detention and make restitution payments totaling $121,482.60 to the state Department of Human Services, the state Agriculture Department and the Social Security Administration, in addition to her probation.

Flowers declined to discuss the case Wednesday, but she wrote in a statement for the court that she was sorry for her actions. She said she didn’t believe she would be alive today if she hadn’t received the help she did.

Flowers was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 1994, according to her statement. She wrote that she became desperate after she exhausted her private health insurance coverage, which had a $1 million cap.

Flowers and her husband weren’t rich, but they weren’t poor enough to qualify for health benefits, so Flowers lied to qualify for medical care services, said Rob Pyron, Flowers’ attorney.

“She is a truly remorseful, repentant person today and has been for some time,” Pyron said.

Flowers’ cancer is in remission, but she suffers from several other debilitating ailments, Pyron said. He said Flowers takes 10 to 13 different medications each day to treat her medical conditions, which include emphysema, osteoporosis and severe arthritis. She is unable to work, Pyron said.

U.S. District Judge Joe Heatonsaid the crime was a serious one that involved a substantial amount of money, but he considered Flowers’ motive when giving her sentence. Flowers’ motivation to receive necessary medical treatment, combined with a lack of previous criminal history created a set of “somewhat extraordinary” circumstances, Heaton said.

“Obviously that does not excuse the conduct, but it does perhaps make it less problematic than it might be,” Heaton said.

Of course, you have those who have defended this cheat because she needed medical treatment, but that is no excuse.  That money was intended for the truly poor, those who really cannot pay their medical bills, not for someone who has an income and other assets and wants to keep what she has and take from those less fortunate.

The morality tale?  Those who lie and deceive and falsify information to cheat someone or something out of money or property or other things that they are attached to will, in the end, get caught.  I know that sometimes it doesn’t seem that way, but justice, however painfully slow, will be served.

Dallas pastor is Christmas Eve theft suspect

by JONATHAN BETZ WFAA

DALLAS — Never has Serita Agnew’s faith been so shaken.

Police told her that the person who stole fur coats and laptop computers from her home was not a random criminal… but her trusted pastor.

The alleged crime took place on Christmas Eve.

“I’m still having a hard time,” Agnew said. “I don’t know what it was about.”

She said her pastor, Sandy McGriff, called her on Christmas Eve, shortly before the break-in. A short time later, police said a neighbor spotted the 52-year-old preacher breaking a window and climbing in.

Arriving officers said they caught McGriff loading her car with Agnew’s furs and purses — and then resisted arrest.

“It’s not like she needed them; she didn’t need them, she has fabulous things,” Agnew said.

McGriff has been preaching for years; she’s part of a well-known spiritual family in South Dallas. She recently began holding services in a small chapel in the back of her husband’s furniture store.

“My biggest mistake was going through… going through the window,” McGriff told News 8, explaining that she was checking on Agnew on Christmas Eve and she caught two men breaking in.

McGriff said she climbed through the window so she could protect Agnew’s property. She said she couldn’t find the key to the house.

But why not just call the police? “My mistake,” she said. “I should have.”

Record show McGriff has a lengthy criminal past and goes by several aliases.

Police booked her under the name “Kathy Robinson,” which McGriff concedes is a fake.

“Everyone has a past,” she said. “I am a giver, not a taker. I’m not a burglar.”

McGriff admits taking pain medication, but insists she’s been clean since the late ’80s.

Serita Agnew has her belongings back, but she worries about what’s been lost.

“She seems to have this connection with God; she seems to be a woman of God,” Agnew said. “I made a decision not to let it shake my faith.”

McGriff said she will plead not guilty to the theft charge. She told News 8 her faith remains strong, and she even held Sunday services just hours after being released from jail.

Now every time someone wants to give me the holy roller, we need church and religion and the morals that they teach garbage every time they hear about crime, I will make sure that I mention this.  How moral is it to rob your own congregation, I mean, outside of church?  This is so outlandish, it’s comical.  We have it pounded into our brains that we need to go to church, it’s “God’s house”, when His own representatives molest, rape, commit adultery, and steal?  Is it no wonder why people like my daughter view churches and religion with such disdain and disgust?

I am surprised that the preacher lady didn’t say that God told her take from the rich and give to the poor, that she was doing His work, or some other outlandish baloney-sausage, as my dearly departed grandmother would say.  I like the whole thing about how she broke in because she saw two men breaking in.  I know she was just being a Good Samaritan and trying to help, but I don’t think helping included stealing the stuff and putting it in her car!  Oh wait, I know why she did – she was just trying to protect the stuff so those bad guys couldn’t take it!

It’s Merely A Flesh Wound

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

They reported in the local paper that a hazardous hole had formed on the I-44 bridge over 161st E Avenue, and that the lane had been closed because some cars had been damaged.

(Photo from the Tulsa World)

(Photo from the Tulsa World)

I think that calling this a hole is as much of an understatement as The Black Knight calling the loss of a limb “merely a flesh wound.”  A hole?  Are you friggin’ kidding me?
No, my friends, this is more than a mere hole.  This a what is commonly known as, “A big-*** chunk of the bridge is missing!”  You are not supposed to be able to wave at the traffic down below through a mere “hole”.
What’s sad, is that this bad boy has a twin on the same bridge!  This, my friends, is bridge replacement, Oklahoma-style.  Yes, here in the Sooner State the bridges fall Sooner than later, because we don’t spend any money on maintenance.  You think I jest, but I do not.  Thanks the how the budgets are set up, you can have a bond issue and have hundreds of millions of dollars for replacement in a capital budget and not a penny for maintenance in an operation budget, and it against state law to transfer money from the capital budget to the operational budget.
The solution to this dilemma?  Quite simple, actually.  Just don’t maintain anything, and sooner rather than later whatever it is that you’ve failed to maintain will fail and can be replaced with capital funds.  Neat how that works.
And by the way, they are passing out hard-hats at the state for those passing through our great state so that you won’t get killed by falling bridge decks on your way to see the Sooners and their multimillion dollar coach, or the relocated Seattle SuperSonics that our legislature insisted on spending 30 million taxpayer dollars to lure to Oklahoma.
Yes, we do have our priorities right!

No Traffic Jam? We’ll See About That!

Monday, February 1st, 2010

For those who have been living under a rock today, here’s a story about a traffic plane that was in the center of a traffic tie-up when it had to land on the New Jersey Turnpike.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100201/ap_on_re_us/us_emergency_landing

I guess this traffic reporter has a “Traffic Jam Guarantee” – if there isn’t a traffic jam, he will personally make one.  I thought the concept of being a reporter was to report on what was happening, not to make it happen, but what do I know.  Leave it to the liberal, left wing mainstream media (MSM, if you prefer the shorthand) to twist the news to match what they want us to hear….(“We said that there IS a traffic jam on the Turnpike, by crackey!”)

If they had landed on an Oklahoma turnpike, they’d have been charged for the distance they covered in the air as well as on the ground, at full 18-wheeler rates…..

One For All, And All For Ourselves

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

AFSCME, the union which represents the non-sworn (non police or fire) city employees, conducted a poll yesterday to determine what the membership preferred – a 5.2 percent pay cut, or layoffs of 65 employees.  The results are in, and by a 3 to 1 margin, the membership preferred – layoffs!

I was saddened to hear this, and saddened to hear some of the excuses, such as “a paycut will reduce my pension.”  Well guess what?  Those 65 won’t get a pension.

The union likes to boast about its teamwork, that “we are all in this together.”  Apparently not.  I find it very disheartening that people would prefer to see others lose their jobs than take a pay cut.  Sad.  Very very sad.

Now, instead of knowing that I have a job, but at a reduced salary, I have to stress for the next 24 hours of whether or not I even have a job at all.  I hope you enjoy your retirement!

Merry Christmas! You’re Unemployed! Don’t Cash That Check! And You’re Stranded!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The big news in Tulsa today is that Arrow Trucking Company, which employs several thousand, has closed its doors.  That is bad enough, but the way it has done it is despicable.

When the office employees went to work this morning, they were told to get their stuff and leave.  At least they got to go home.  The company cut off the fuel cards for the drivers, who are now stranded at locations throughout the country without a way to get home.  And it gets better!  It seems that the last paychecks have bounced, too!  Right now, three days before Christmas, there are hundreds of drivers who are stranded without the means to get home and without the means to stay where they are at!  Merry Christmas to all!

This is the second time in the past five years that a local company has shafted its employees.  Hale-Halsell, a food distributor and grocery store operator, went out of business in a similar dramatic fashion – bounced checks, no notice, complete shutdown.  What is tragic is that the owners of these companies get away scot free.  Sure they get a fine, but when you have millions of dollars, so what?

When I was with the City of Cabot, I was canned right before Christmas.  And let me just say, it made for a very sad, depressing, and heartbreaking Christmas.  Three days from Christmas, I know that I have a job and can pay all of my bills and take care of my family.  My heart goes out to those poor Arrow employees who now find themselves destitute and deserted by the company they were loyal to.

There is chatter on various message boards about the situation, and imploring people to help these stranded drivers any way you can.  If during your Christmas travels, you see an Arrow truck, stop and let the driver know that someone cares.  That is what Jesus would do.  That is the true meaning of the season!

Teen Athlete Claims She Was Benched For Pregnancy

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Here’s one about a teenage athlete who is crying discrimination because her playing time on the volleyball team has been reduced because she is pregnant.

http://www.parentdish.com/2009/12/08/teen-athlete-claims-she-was-benched-for-pregnancy/

What would happen if the coach didn’t reduce the playing time and she lost the baby?  I can tell you what would happen- they would sue the school district for causing the miscarriage.

Having a baby is a joyous event, right?  What the hell was wrong with the coach telling her teammates that she is pregnant?  Is she embarrassed that she is pregnant?  If she is, then she should have thought of that BEFORE she had sex…..

I wonder if she goes to church, and if she does, whether she puts on “holier-than-thou” airs.  It’s embarrassing to see a pregnant teenager go to church and act likes everything is okay.  It isn’t.  Fornication is against God’s law, and you dishonor God when you go into His house after violating his law.  If you read about the Catholic Church of the Middle Ages, those asking for forgiveness and reconciliation had to wear sackcloth and sit outside the church, in humiliation for all of the world to see, until said time that they completed their penance and were welcomed back into the church.

There are consequences to every action.  If you don’t like the consequences, then don’t do the action.  That is what is wrong with society today – everybody thinks they can do anything they want and there shouldn’t be any consequences.  Humiliation and embarrassment are a real consequence for behaving immorally.  And the mother should be ashamed of herself, too, for pushing the issue and not pulling her daughter off of the team.  The mother, by her actions, is saying, “It’s okay to have sex when you are a teenager….”
